Although this was done as a parody, it quite effectively drives home the emphasis put on young women to have a certain appearance. Conceived by Zhuoying (Joy) Li, a design and technology graduate of NY's Parsons The New School for Design who now is studying interaction design at NYU. She designed the mask to bring attention on the pressures women face to adhere to standards of beauty set by Hollywood, the fashion industry and westernized views.
She was motivated in particular, she says, by the many young Chinese women who she says suffer negative self-esteem due to beauty images perpetuated by the media. You can check out her very realistic web page promoting this product here. http://www.unifacemask.com/ Pretty scary, huh?
